Aiken, South Carolina, has something exciting on the horizon as local students from USC Aiken channel their creativity into a heartfelt project this spring. A classroom of bright minds is teaming up to design promotional posters for the upcoming Memorial Day parade—an event that promises to unite the community and honor those who have served.
Under the guidance of Professor Michael Fowler, a dedicated group of 21 students is taking their graphic design skills to the next level. The project not only hones their talents but also promotes the annual Memorial Day parade scheduled for May 24 at 10 a.m. in downtown Aiken. This initiative offers a wonderful opportunity for students to embrace their artistic flair while engaging with an important community tradition.
The talented students involved in this project include Samantha Lazar, Marra Hunkins, Xavien Williams, Brenton Vasquez, Lauren Lucas, Asarel Crockett, Katelyn Chisolm-Riley, and Wyatt Muckinhaupt, among others. Each student is encouraged to infuse their designs with meaningful imagery and key information that embodies the spirit of Memorial Day, ensuring that the value of remembrance shines through.
This collaboration with the Aiken County Veterans Council has been blossoming since 2019, except for a brief hiatus in 2020 when the parade was sadly canceled due to the pandemic. Now, the students are more eager than ever to create something special that honors our heroes.
Professor Fowler plays a crucial role by mentoring students throughout the design process. He emphasizes the importance of elements like color, spacing, and text placement, guiding them toward a professional look that will not only catch the eye but resonate with the community. The students also actively seek feedback from their peers, Professor Fowler, and veterans council member Linda Caldwell. This collaborative approach fosters a creative environment where every idea is valued, and revisions are welcomed.
The students have a chance to win some fabulous prizes for their hard work! The top designs will be rewarded with gift cards and a framed copy of the winning poster—recognition that will motivate them to push their creativity to new heights.
This year’s parade is shaping up to be a momentous occasion, with high-profile figures like retired Army Colonel David Lobb serving as grand marshal and Aiken City Council member Kay Brohl in attendance. The route kicks off on Park Avenue and veers north on Laurens Street, promising a lively atmosphere filled with community spirit and patriotism.
Boasting the largest group of students to participate so far, this year’s promotional posters are set to be truly remarkable. Their work will be evaluated not just for artistry, but also for creating a professional-looking poster tailored for the veterans council’s promotional efforts. Additionally, there will be space allocated for local business sponsors, encouraging the community to engage with and support this noble cause financially.
As the days gradually inch closer to May 24, excitement builds around town for the Memorial Day parade. The students’ dedication and creativity reflect the essence of this commemorative event, reminding everyone to take a moment to honor the brave souls who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. So mark your calendars and get ready to enjoy a celebration that truly brings Aiken together!
