The Augusta University men’s track and field team showcased outstanding performances at the Georgia Tech Invitational, setting the stage for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Championships. Freshman Jalen Belton led in several sprints, while the team excelled in middle-distance and field events. The Jaguars demonstrated their competitive spirit, highlighting their readiness for the championships in Daytona Beach, Florida later this month.
Augusta, Georgia – Last weekend, the Augusta University men’s track and field team capped off their regular season with a stellar performance at the Georgia Tech Invitational, showcasing their talents across various events. With the Peach Belt Conference Championships looming just around the corner, the Jaguars displayed some serious competitive spirit and grit on the track and in the field!
The sprinting events kicked off with an impressive showing from freshman star Jalen Belton, who led the 100 meters with a remarkable time of 10.65 seconds, landing him in 18th overall. Belton wasn’t a one-hit wonder either; he also dominated the 200 meters with a lightning-fast finish of 21.90 seconds. Close behind in that race was Devin Barolette, clocking in at 22.11.
The 400 meters, another challenging sprint, saw Charlie Roberts leading the way for Augusta with a sensational time of 49.24 seconds. Teammates Roberto Barrera and Mykel Thompson followed with solid finishes of 49.88 seconds and 50.79 seconds respectively. Not to forget, the 4×400-meter relay team of Roberts, Barolette, Amir Dayal, and Barrera smashed their race with a time of 3:22.50.
Moving on to the middle distance events, it was a treat to witness the senior duo, Amir Dayal and Seth Eye, both nailing a time of 1:54.72 in the 800 meters, making them standout competitors. Other notable performances came from Noah Shepherd with 1:56.70 and David Ajuzie at 1:59.02.
The excitement didn’t stop there! In the 1500 meters, Patrick Motes sped his way to a fantastic finish at 3:59.04, followed closely by Eye and Shepherd who crossed the line at 3:59.56 and 4:14.45 respectively. The 5000 meters was another highlight, with Matthew Moore leading the team at 15:21.63, while Brandon Martin, Eli Corn, and Elijah Fitts all contributed strong performances as well.
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Andrew Todd put in a solid effort, finishing ninth overall with a time of 9:24.28, right before Andrew Helfers completed his race at 9:26.48.
Now, onto the field events which were just as impressive! Mitchell Jean Baptiste soared high in the high jump, clearing a remarkable height of 2.03 meters (that’s about 6′ 7.75”) and finishing sixth overall. David Batts also made a great mark at 1.90 meters (6′ 2.75″).
In the javelin throw, Ryan Lee had a noteworthy throw as well, reaching a distance of 50.96 meters (or 167′ 2″), securing the 12th place. Just behind him, Joshua Bowen followed with a solid cast at 49.75 meters (163′ 3″).
