The scenic Forest Hills Golf Club faced harsh weather during the Valspar Augusta Invitational.
The final round of the Valspar Augusta Invitational was canceled due to heavy overnight rains in Augusta, Georgia. The University of Michigan women’s golf team faced tough conditions, finishing 10th out of 13 teams. Strong performances from siblings Sydney and Lauren Sung could not save the team from the challenging weather, which impacted their scores. Looking ahead, the Wolverines remain determined as they prepare for the upcoming Chattanooga Classic.
Augusta, Georgia – The final round of the highly anticipated Valspar Augusta Invitational came to an abrupt end after it was canceled due to overnight rains and fears of more rain to come. Set against the scenic backdrop of the Forest Hills Golf Club, the beautiful 6,201-yard, par 72 course was ready for action, but Mother Nature had other plans!
The University of Michigan women’s golf team found themselves in a bit of a pickle, finishing in 10th place out of 13 competing teams with a total score of 617 after two rounds of play—308 in the first round and 309 in the second. This left them tied for ninth place after the first round, but unfortunately, the team struggled to keep up their momentum.
Among the Wolverines, sibling duo Sydney and Lauren Sung shone brightly, as they led the way for the team. Sydney tied for 29th place with a total score of 153, while Lauren closely followed her sister, tying for 31st with 154. Sydney’s rounds were a consistent 76 and 77, while Lauren posted a similar pattern with 76 and 78. Their solid performance offered the team hope, but unfortunately, it didn’t translate into a better overall finish.
Mara Janess, yet another strong contributor to the team, wrapped up the tournament with a cumulative score of 156. Her first round was a bit of a struggle at 80, but she rallied back impressively during the second round with a score of 76.
Other Wolverines included sophomore Grace Wang, who finished tied for 52nd with a total score of 158, achieving rounds of 76 and 82. Freshman Thomasine Bartholdson, who made her collegiate debut at this tournament, also finished with a score of 158, mirroring Grace’s rounds with 80 and 78.
The rough conditions didn’t make things any easier for the Wolverines, with a handful of double bogeys marring their scores and impacting their overall performance. The team visibly struggled to limit mistakes during this challenging tournament, which ultimately affected their standings significantly.
Coach Jan Dowling mentioned that the tougher wind conditions played a big role in their difficulties during the event. Following their last tournament, where they finished in 8th place, the Wolverines were aiming for a stronger showing this time around. Alas, the weather threw a wrench in their plans!
As the tournament wrapped up, the Wolverines are already looking forward to their next challenge. They will head to the Chattanooga Classic, scheduled for March 28-30 in Ooltewah, Tennessee. With hopes of improving their team performance, they will look to regroup and overcome the challenges posed at the Valspar Augusta Invitational.
In the world of golf, as in life, it’s all about how you respond to tough times. The Wolverines will surely take these lessons to heart as they hit the course once again in the coming weeks. With determination and hard work, there’s no telling how high they might fly next time!
