Hyundai's electric vehicle assembly plant in Savannah is ready to serve the growing EV market.
Hyundai’s Savannah plant is now producing all-electric vehicles that qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit, boosting local job creation and the economy. With plans to increase production and build a new battery facility, Hyundai is solidifying its presence in the electric vehicle market. Their target production has risen from 300,000 to 500,000 vehicles annually, including hybrids, while navigating potential changes to EV tax credits.
Savannah, Georgia, is buzzing with great news as the Hyundai Motor Group’s Savannah plant gears up to produce all-electric vehicles eligible for a sweet $7,500 federal tax credit! This means that since April 1, every electric vehicle rolling out from this assembly plant qualifies for some extra savings, which is a huge win for both the company and eco-conscious drivers.
So how does this happen? Well, the magic happens right in Georgia! The batteries for these electric vehicles are sourced from the nearby SK Battery America facility located in Commerce, Georgia. To tap into that lucrative tax credit, Hyundai ensures that at least 60% of an EV’s battery components are made right here in the USA. This local sourcing not only helps the environment but also boosts the local economy, creating jobs and opportunities for the community.
Hyundai’s Metaplant made a splash when it opened in October 2022. It’s currently cranking out more than 200 electric vehicles daily, including their big hits, the IONIQ 5 and the upcoming IONIQ 9 SUV, which is yet to hit the market. The IONIQ 5, in particular, has become Hyundai’s top-seller, showing just how popular electric vehicles are becoming!
Interestingly, vehicles produced at this plant prior to April 1 aren’t eligible for the tax credit. But don’t worry—Hyundai is stepping up with other pricing incentives to keep things appealing for potential buyers.
The excitement doesn’t stop with just vehicle production. There’s a battery manufacturing facility under construction right on the Metaplant site, and it’s expected to open next year, though it has seen delays. Those delays stemmed from some pretty rough weather, including not one but three hurricanes and a rare winter storm that hit the Savannah area.
But that’s not all! There’s also a second Hyundai battery plant in the works near Cartersville, Georgia, which is now set to open in 2026 instead of 2025 due to similar complications.
Savannah residents might be curious about how electric vehicle sales are faring overall. In 2024, there was a 7.3% increase in EV sales in the U.S., building upon a massive 49% growth from the previous year. However, it seems like the initial hype has calmed down a bit, leaving some uncertainty in the market.
Political winds are also swirling with former President Trump and Congressional Republicans threatening to eliminate the federal EV tax credit. This could create even more unpredictability in the market, making it a time for both buyers and manufacturers to stay alert.
Hyundai is not just sitting back; they have big dreams! By 2030, they aim to expand their electric vehicle portfolio to a staggering 23 models. Plus, they’re diving into hybrid vehicles, which combine traditional gasoline engines with electric batteries—the perfect middle ground as the demand for fully electric cars stabilizes.
The Savannah plant initially set a goal of producing 300,000 EVs annually but has raised that target to 500,000, including hybrids. These hybrids will help meet current demand, which is currently outpacing production capabilities, a situation Hyundai is eager to address.
With these exciting developments, Savannah is indeed becoming a hub for electric vehicle production, alongside a commitment to boosting local economies and providing consumers with more options. The future is looking bright for Hyundai and the electric vehicle community in Savannah!
