Officers of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office celebrate commendable actions.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has honored four individuals for their exceptional bravery and quick thinking during critical incidents, including a life-saving effort in a drug overdose situation and effective leadership during events. The community experienced a fire incident at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, but no injuries were reported. The office also updated the public on a detainee’s condition following a gunshot injury, highlighting the commitment of law enforcement to the community’s safety and trust.
Richmond County is buzzing this week after the Sheriff’s Office took a moment to shine a spotlight on some truly heroic actions by its members. Sheriff Eugene Brantley and his dedicated command staff gathered to honor four individuals whose exceptional efforts have made a real difference in the community. These commendations are more than just a pat on the back; they exemplify the core mission of the Sheriff’s Office, which is to protect lives, serve with integrity, and build trust within the community.
On March 29, 2025, Deputy Martin Perez and Corporal Brandon Kennedy found themselves in a life-or-death situation that would forever mark their careers. They responded to an urgent call about a male who had overdosed and was found unresponsive, without a pulse. His name was William Marciall, and despite attempts to revive him with Narcan, things were looking bleak.
In a flash, Deputy Perez jumped into action, starting CPR right away. Corporal Kennedy was right there, assisting where needed. Thanks to their quick thinking and teamwork, William regained a heartbeat and consciousness just in time for the EMS to arrive. It is moments like these that remind us how important every second can be in a crisis.
Another shining star of the Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Timothy Owens, received recognition for his calm demeanor and quick thinking during a tense situation on the 5th Street Bridge. His ability to interpret the emotional aspects of the crisis played a crucial role in leading to a peaceful resolution, ultimately saving a life. It’s commendable to see officers trained not just in tactics but also in compassion.
Also taking center stage was Captain Scott Gay, who was recognized for his exceptional leadership during the bustling 2025 Augusta National Golf Tournament. With thousands in attendance, Captain Gay ensured that law enforcement coverage was seamless and that everyone could enjoy the event in safety. This kind of strategic thinking goes a long way in maintaining public safety during major gatherings.
Sergeant Chad Dodaro acted quickly, using a fire extinguisher to suppress the flames until the fire department arrived. The sprinkler system also played a crucial role in containing the fire, making it possible to evacuate multiple female inmates from the facility safely. A security perimeter was established while the Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department extinguished the fire and ventilated the area. Cleanup efforts are now underway, and repairs will follow shortly, but operations have quickly returned to normal.
In other news that has garnered public concern, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office provided updates regarding Sophia Evette Kitchens. She had been hospitalized after sustaining a gunshot wound to the face on April 13, 2025, and spent nearly a week recovering. After being discharged, she was detained due to outstanding warrants, including a no-bond felony related to a family violence incident involving multiple parties. While her medical needs are being continuously attended to within the detention center, it is important to note that her detention is a court decision.
All in all, Richmond County has been through a whirlwind, with acts of bravery shining bright against the backdrop of challenging incidents. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to not only keeping the community safe but also fostering an environment of trust and integrity. As issues arise, they stand ready, demonstrating that the guardians of our community are both courageous and compassionate.
