Summerville (The Hill)

Summerville, often referred to as the “Hill”, is one of Augusta’s oldest and most beautiful neighborhoods—where Southern charm meets deep-rooted history. Perched atop the city’s natural rise, just a few miles from downtown and the Savannah River, Summerville feels like a step back in time in the best way.

Strolling through Summerville, you’ll find shady, oak-lined streets, blooming azaleas, and stunning architecture at every turn. From grand antebellum mansions and stately Greek Revival homes to cozy bungalows and historic cottages, the neighborhood showcases more than a century of architectural styles. Many of these homes date back to the 1800s, and several are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

But Summerville isn’t just about pretty houses—it’s a living, vibrant community. It’s home to Augusta University’s Summerville campus, adding energy and academic life to the area. You’ll also find charming local cafes, neighborhood churches, small businesses, and parks tucked between historic blocks.

What makes Summerville especially unique is its blend of elegance and laid-back character. It’s not uncommon to see neighbors chatting on wide front porches, families out for evening walks, or students reading under massive magnolias. There’s a sense of pride and preservation here—residents care deeply about their community, its past, and its future.

Summerville is also the site of several seasonal events and home tours, especially in the spring when gardens are in full bloom. And during Masters Week, many of its homes host visitors from around the world, adding a fun buzz of hospitality.
